McLaughlin Brothers Furniture Company and McLaughlin Funeral Chapel
In June of 2001, a letter came addressed to the McLaughlin Funeral Chapel saying in part, " This is a letter of appreciation to you for all you did to help us through the difficult time we experienced at the death of our Mother. Your professional and yet kind attitude helped us through something we never thought we could make it through. Our Mother and Father put their trust in you a long time ago, and now we know why."
I keep this letter above my desk alongside another letter dated March of 1925. It reads, in part, "We have patronized the McLaughlin Funeral Chapel for the past 30 years with no regret. Their word was their bond. Everything was so gently handled that it seemed to make things, over which we have no control, easier."
These letters are reminders to me, a 4th generation business owner, that we carry on a tradition of services which began in 1880 when my great grandfather and his brother began our business, McLaughlin Brothers Furniture Company and Funeral Chapel. A newspaper article dated 1910 described the business as going from "small beginnings" to becoming
"The Pride of Sedalia". It further describes the founding brothers as "public spirited" men in whom their neighbors had confidence. And lastly, that they were both "gentlemen".
This tradition was carried on by my grandfather and then by my Father, Philip McLaughlin and his brother, John McLaughlin. In our history many of our associates have had careers which spanned more than half a century. They have represented our business with integrity.
Funeral Service is important. Good funeral service protects and sanctifies the time families need to come together, to reflect, to pay tribute, to share their stories with friends and neighbors.
Over the years our lives have been intertwined with the lives of many people here in Sedalia. We have been privileged to serve these families; we have learned and are still learning much from doing that.
Each life is valued, respected, and celebrated in a manner that is appropriate for each individual and family. I am grateful to be a part of this tradition.
